The Ley Orgánica 2/2006, de 3 de mayo, de Educación specifically regulates higher arts courses, defining them in the context of the European Higher Education Area. Organisation of these courses, their systems of evaluation and quality improvement, are also set out in Real Decreto 1614/2009
Specifically, official master's degrees in arts courses must be accredited through inclusion in a national register of non-university teaching centres, subsequent to a process of official recognition of curricula by the Ministry of Education, who shall request a report from the autonomous region’s external assessment body, such as ACSUCYL. Changes to these curricula must also be approved by the Ministry.
In addition, in accordance with the above-mentioned legislation, listed master's degrees in arts courses must renew their accreditation each six years by undergoing an assessment procedure by the autonomous region’s external assessment body. Said assessment should ensure that the corresponding curriculum is being implemented in accordance with the authorised project through an evaluation that includes an external site visit to the centre where the degree is being taught. Furthermore, up until the time when they must undergo evaluation for renewal of accreditation, the listed degrees will be subject to follow-up by the external assessment body in the region, based on the public information available.
In order to regulate the procedures for the proposal and modification of curricula of higher arts courses that form part of the master's degrees taught at private centres, Castilla y Leon has promoted ORDEN EDU/329/2018 , which regulates ACSUCYL'S cooperation in the evaluation of proposals for the official recognition and modification of these degrees as well as the report model for their curricula.
